OpenAI Unveils Sora 2 and Sora App

Sora 2 can model failure as well as success, a critical step toward building AI systems that understand and navigate the physical world.

  • OpenAI announced the release of Sora 2, its most advanced video and audio generation model to date, marking what the company calls the “GPT-3.5 moment for video.”

When the original Sora launched in February 2024, it was hailed as a turning point in AI video generation, introducing object permanence and laying the foundation for world simulation. Now, Sora 2 pushes that vision further with dramatically improved physics, realism, and creative control, setting a new benchmark for AI-driven video models.

Sora 2 can simulate complex physical interactions: basketballs bounce off backboards instead of teleporting into hoops, paddleboards flex with water dynamics, and Olympic gymnastic routines play out with striking authenticity.

Most importantly, Sora 2 can model failure as well as success, a critical step toward building AI systems that understand and navigate the physical world.

    Launch of the Sora App

Alongside the model, OpenAI is debuting Sora, a new iOS app built around creative collaboration. The app allows users to generate videos, remix each other’s work, and use “cameos” to insert themselves, or friends, into AI-generated scenes with high fidelity after a one-time identity recording.

Internally, OpenAI employees testing the app reported that cameos sparked new friendships and made communication feel more playful. “It felt like the natural evolution of messaging, from text to emojis to voice notes to this,” the company said.

    Availability and Next Steps

The Sora app is now live on iOS in the US and Canada, with plans for wider expansion soon. Users can also access Sora 2 at sora.com, with free access limits initially and higher-quality generations available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers. An API release is also planned.

OpenAI says Sora 1 Turbo will remain available, and all existing creations will continue to be stored in users’ libraries.
