Ajay Shah is a distinguished economist with expertise in public economics, taxation, and economic governance reforms. He has held senior positions at the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, Indira Gandhi Institute for Development Research, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Institute for Public Finance and Policy.
Shah co-headed the Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission, which drafted the Indian Financial Code, and has led multiple expert groups on financial inclusion. His research and policy work focus on reforming equity markets, pension systems, and fiscal governance to foster sustainable economic growth. A strong advocate of evidence-based policy and transparency, he has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s financial and economic reforms.
He is also the co-author, with Vijay Kelkar, of the widely acclaimed book In Service of the Republic: The Art and Science of Economic Policy, which distills insights on how governments can design and implement effective policy.
