Instagram has announced the expansion of its age-appropriate 13+ content rating and Limited Content setting across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Building on the launch of the revamped Teen Accounts and the stricter Limited Content setting rolled out in the UK, US, Australia, and Canada in October 2025, teens under 18 will be automatically placed in an updated 13+ setting and will require parental permission to opt out.
The strategic move aims to ensure safer, age-appropriate experiences for young users. The update will be fully rolled out in the coming months.
“Just as teens may occasionally encounter some suggestive content or strong language in age-appropriate entertainment, there may be similar instances on Instagram, but we’re going to keep doing all we can to keep those instances as rare as possible. We recognise no system is perfect, and we’re committed to improving over time. We hope this update reassures parents that we’re working to show teens safe, age-appropriate content on Instagram by default, while also giving them more ways to shape their teens’ experience,” the official statement read.
While Teen Accounts were designed to protect the age group from inappropriate content, Instagram is refining its age-appropriate guidelines to hide more potentially inappropriate content in the updated default 13+ content setting.
The rollout includes enhanced content filtering, prioritizing safer, age-appropriate material for teens by default. It will also limit posts with strong language, risky stunts, or anything that might promote harmful behaviour.
It is also introducing a new “Limited Content” setting to give parents the option to apply even stricter controls.
Acknowledging that every family system has its own set of age-appropriate guidelines, the platform will show teens significantly less mature content and will not allow them to view, leave, or receive comments on such posts.
Notably, AI tools have also been updated to ensure responses remain appropriate for users aged 13 and above.
