Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, took charge as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on 11 December 2024 for a three-year term. He was previously Secretary in the Department of Revenue and before that Secretary in the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance.
He has wide experience across power, finance, taxation, and information technology, and has held senior positions at both the state and central levels, as well as with a United Nations agency. He was Chairman and Managing Director of Rural Electrification Corporation Limited and served on the Central Board of the RBI as a Government Nominee Director in 2022.
Malhotra is a graduate in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and holds a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University.
