  • Google Maps is getting one of its most significant upgrades in over a decade, with the introduction of new AI features and a redesigned navigation interface to make the platform more conversational and immersive. The update centers on an AI assistant called “Ask Maps,” powered by Google’s Gemini models, and a new visual navigation system known as “Immersive Navigation.”

The Ask Maps feature introduces a conversational interface that lets users query the app in natural language, rather than relying on traditional keyword searches. Instead of simply searching for nearby businesses, users can ask detailed questions about their current needs. For example, someone with a low phone battery might ask where they can charge their device without needing to queue for a drink at a café. The system then attempts to generate tailored recommendations based on contextual data.

To do this, Google says the feature draws on a vast dataset comprising information about more than 300 million locations worldwide. The company also incorporates user-generated reviews from a community of over 500 million contributors to refine its recommendations. Ask Maps can additionally factor in a user’s past preferences—such as favored restaurant types or frequently visited locations—to produce more personalized suggestions.

The assistant is also designed to function as a planning tool. Users can provide a list of places they intend to visit and ask the system to identify additional points of interest nearby. Once a destination is selected, Ask Maps can assist with tasks such as making restaurant reservations, saving locations for future trips, or sharing destinations with friends.

Alongside the AI assistant, Google is introducing Immersive Navigation, a redesigned mapping interface intended to more closely resemble real-world driving conditions. The new system presents navigation through a three-dimensional visual environment that highlights key elements of the road, including lane markings, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs.

Buildings, terrain, and infrastructure, such as bridges and overpasses, are rendered to more closely match their real-world appearances, potentially making navigation more intuitive.

The update also includes several smaller improvements designed to refine the overall navigation experience. These include clearer alerts about route conditions, more natural-sounding voice guidance, recommendations for nearby parking as drivers approach their destination, and real-time notifications about road disruptions. When alternative routes become available, the app will also provide additional context to help users decide whether switching routes is worthwhile.

Ask Maps is beginning its rollout in the United States on iOS and Android devices, with desktop support expected later this year. Immersive Navigation will also begin rolling out in the United States, gradually expanding to compatible mobile devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles equipped with built-in Google software.
