  • Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) announced a multi-year partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to promote artificial intelligence development in the Gulf region.

The agreement will see the two parties deepen their efforts in AI research, enhance technical skills, and accelerate startup growth across the UAE and the region. Additionally, a Strategic Research Program will be established to disseminate AI research in priority areas, with AWS providing cloud services, technical mentorship, and guidance, while MBZUAI will bring its faculty expertise, talent, and laboratory capacity to the deal.

“Blending our cloud technologies and expertise with MBZUAI’s visionary academic and research capabilities, we’re establishing a foundation of technical excellence to support the students and researchers of today and tomorrow. Through our shared commitment, we look forward to advancing technology and creating lasting impact in the region,” said Chris Erasmus, General Manager, UAE, Rest of Middle East and North Africa, AWS.

The collaboration will also see the launch of GenAI Academy, an initiative aimed at developing hackathons for MBZUAI undergraduate students to address concerns in government, entrepreneurship, and social impact. For this, AWS will make its training resources, including instructor-led AWS Classroom Training and self-paced digital training on AWS Skill Builder, available to hone skills in cloud computing, AI, and machine learning (ML).

Timothy Baldwin, Provost and Professor of natural language processing at MBZUAI notes that the collaboration will bring together academic depth and industrial scale. “We are building a bridge between research and real-world impact and unlocking transformational opportunities for our faculty, researchers, and students,” he said.

This will double down on MBZUAI’s efforts to have academic research translate into industry application, alongside supporting the UAE’s National Strategy for Higher Education 2030.
