xAI and Tesla Launch “Macrohard,” a Playful Dig at Microsoft

The system combines xAI’s Grok model with Tesla-developed agents, claiming to execute tasks across digital workflows.

  • Elon Musk on Wednesday introduced a joint initiative between Tesla and his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, describing it as a system designed to emulate the operational functions of software companies. The project, which Musk referred to as “Macrohard” or “Digital Optimus,” represents an attempt to combine large language models with agent-based software automation capable of interacting directly with computer interfaces.

In a post on his social platform X, Musk said the system integrates xAI’s LLM Grok as a high-level “navigator” with a Tesla-developed AI agent that can interpret real-time video of a computer screen and execute keyboard and mouse actions. The architecture is designed to enable the AI to perform complex software tasks autonomously, effectively operating across digital workflows that are typically handled by human developers or software teams.

Musk suggested the system could, in principle, simulate the functions of entire companies. “That is why the program is called MACROHARD, a funny reference to Microsoft,” he said.

The announcement arrives amid growing investor concern about the potential impact of “agentic” AI systems on the software industry. Tools capable of autonomously  writing code, managing applications, or executing administrative tasks could reshape established business models and also come with the risk of oversight.

Recent developments in the sector have intensified those concerns. The launch of Claude Cowork by Anthropic, which can autonomously complete a range of computer-based tasks, has already prompted debate among analysts about whether such systems could disrupt traditional productivity software and development platforms.

Musk said Macrohard would run on Tesla’s in-house AI4 chip while relying on Nvidia-based server infrastructure for large-scale model computation, a combination he described as cost-competitive.

Musk has been trying to integrate his AI ventures with his existing technology companies since earlier this year. Tesla agreed in January to invest roughly $2 billion to acquire shares in xAI, while SpaceX last month acquired the startup in an all-stock transaction that valued the rocket company at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion.
