Ashwini Vaishnaw is the government’s lead voice on artificial intelligence and digital inclusion, anchoring the IndiaAI Mission.
In early 2025, he announced that more than 18,000 high-performance graphics processing units would be made available through cloud service providers to support India’s AI research ecosystem. He also proposed the creation of a national AI Safety Institute and launched new challenges to encourage development of foundational AI models. In July, he unveiled a nationwide program to provide free AI training at more than half a million Common Service Centers, bringing new skills to rural and semi-urban communities.
Vaishnaw has also championed India’s semiconductor efforts. In September, he presented the country’s first domestically developed 32-bit processor, called Vikram, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has said that “Bharat is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation.”
