Elon Musk has made another bold prediction about the future of artificial intelligence, claiming that AI could surpass the combined intelligence of all humans within the next five years. Responding to a post by entrepreneur and author Peter H. Diamandis on X, Musk wrote, “AI probably exceeds the sum of all human intelligence in 4 or 5 years.”

The Tesla and xAI CEO contested Diamandis’s view that human brilliance is limited not only by intelligence but also by the number of people with access to tools and resources.

“Abundance isn’t just more compute and more energy. It’s more minds. More people are free to invent, create, and solve. The ceiling on human genius has always been the size of the human population and their access to tools and resources. As humanity moves into space, we shatter all limitations,” Diamandis shared.

Musk’s views drew mixed reactions from users, with one claiming, “Intelligence without a soul is not true intelligence.”

Another, by the username of @TechySwift, echoed the above sentiments, “It might exceed the sum of all human intelligence. But it may be the same as saying the sum of all mammal intelligence exceeds the sum of all human intelligence today. Possibly true but meaningless.”

The discourse around AI’s impact on the future of human intelligence and work continues, with AI experts being divided on what AI will do.

@Clay_phi criticized the whole comment itself, “You guys keep saying this stuff like it’s a good thing. You more or less rip off the human mind uncompensated, make it run far faster, then sell it to employers for cheaper.”

In another post, @DavidSHolz raised a staggering possibility: what if five million humanoid robots could erect Manhattan in six months? If that’s true, what does the world look like in 2045— or 2100? Replying to it, Musk shared equal optimism, “Amazing abundance for all!”

In March, Musk made one of his boldest bets: xAI will not only catch up with its AI rivals like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google within the year, but eventually outpace them. Meanwhile, his AI venture xAI has been in troubled waters due to its AI image-generation controversy, which involved nonconsensual edits of people, mainly children and women.
