ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank are partnering on five new US AI data center sites under Stargate, OpenAI’s infrastructure platform, the companies said on Tuesday.
The five sites, along with the flagship in Texas and ongoing projects with CoreWeave, will bring Stargate to nearly 7 gigawatts of planned capacity and more than $400 billion in investment over the next three years.
“AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it. That compute is the key to ensuring everyone can benefit from AI and to unlocking future breakthroughs,” said Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI, in the official release. “We’re already making historic progress toward that goal..not just to meet initial commitment, but to lay the foundation for what comes next.”
The locations in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; a site in the Midwest; Lordstown, Ohio; and Milam County, Texas were chosen after reviewing about 300 proposals from over 30 states.
In July, OpenAI announced another 4.5 gigawatts of Stargate capacity with Oracle.
“To meet this enormous demand, we continue to expand…footprint at an unrivaled pace,” said Clay Magouyrk, CEO, Oracle.
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank first announced the $500 billion Stargate commitment earlier this year. With Tuesday’s announcement, OpenAI is on track to secure the full 10-gigawatt target by end-2025, ahead of schedule.
“Stargate is harnessing SoftBank’s innovative data center design and energy expertise to deliver the scalable compute that powers AI’s future. Together with OpenAI, Arm, and our Stargate partners, we are paving the way for a new era where AI advances humanity,” SoftBank Group Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son, who also chairs Stargate.
The sites are expected to generate more than 25,000 onsite jobs, with tens of thousands more indirectly.
The announcement follows Nvidia’s $100 billion investment in OpenAI.
