OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser with ChatGPT built in, so you can ask, summarize, compare, and act on what’s on the page without switching tabs or copy-pasting.
With Atlas, ChatGPT can accompany users anywhere online, understanding their context and helping them complete tasks in real time.
The browser includes built-in memory, allowing ChatGPT to recall previous conversations and user details to provide continuity. Browser memories are optional and can be managed or deleted by users at any time.
“During lectures, I like using practice questions and real-world examples to really understand the material. I used to switch between my slides and ChatGPT, taking screenshots just to ask a question. Now ChatGPT instantly understands what I’m looking at, helping me improve my knowledge checks as I go,” said Yogya Kalra, a college student and early tester of ChatGPT Atlas.
The browser also includes an enhanced agent mode, enabling ChatGPT to handle tasks such as research, analysis, scheduling, and planning directly within the browsing window.
Agent mode is currently available in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users.
ChatGPT Atlas is available globally on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users.
A beta version is being rolled out for Business, and for Enterprise and Education users, if enabled by administrators. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are expected to follow soon.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions online.
One user on X commented, “So Sam Altman now gets to see everything I browse?” Another wrote, “So this is basically ChatGPT, with a bunch of Google tabs integrated — damn, I was excited for a minute there.”
